Pep’s Praise: Echeverri’s Fearless Flair Shines in Man City Debut
In the dying moments of the FA Cup final, Guardiola, trailing by a goal, sent in the young player Claudio Echeverri to have a go. In the game ahead of Bournemouth, Guardiola said he was impressed with Echeverri’s performance as he posed a threat at all times.
Wanting to turn him into one of his special talents, Guardiola put a huge future ahead of Echeverri. The Argentine teenager joined Manchester City last summer from River Plate for a fee of £12.5 million (€14.5 million) plus up to £7.7 million (€9 million) in performance-related add-ons.

“Sometimes young players surprise you. Look at Claudio Echeverri, he played well… Because his mind is clean. He has nothing to defend… When you arrive fresh, you have no expectations…”
“Can he play in Premier League? We’ll see. We’re here to help…” 🗣️‼️ pic.twitter.com/mUtowZPPnh
Echeverri, who made his senior debut straight into the FA Cup final, is being held in high regard by the Spanish manager. Talking about his future and nourishing young talent, Guardiola in his press conference said:
“Look at Claudio Echeverri, he played good, right?” the boss said. He had three or four chances, and every time he was around that box, it was a dangerous situation.”
“He has no past, and his mind is clean and has nothing to defend in the past. Maybe in two years it will be different. But when you arrive, you’re keen, and after that, you demand more status for what you’ve done. But [for Claudio] it doesn’t exist.”
Calling the opportunities for Echeverri a gift, Pep Guardiola continued:
“He played good. For him, it’s a gift to play here, he wants to prove he can play in the Premier League.
“Will he be able to? I don’t know. Will we be here to help him? We will try.
“This is the situation.”
Echeverri’s success in the U17 World Cup 2023 got him into the limelight as he contributed 5 goals and 3 assists. Scoring a Hat-trick against Brazil in the quarter-finals (3-0 win), he won the Bronze Boot in the competition.
Signing for Manchester City in January 2024, Echeverri remained at River Plate till 2025. Getting his first game in line, the Argentine will be eyed to make an appearance against Bournemouth if needed.
Making the start off the bench in the FA Cup finals, the 19-year-old can surely cause an impact. Manchester City, currently out of the top five, will be in for a do-or-die game against the Cherries. Competing for the UECL, Andoni Iraola and his side could test Guardiola in their do-or-die game. Losing this reverse fixture 2-1 in March, Iraola will look to make the most out of their final two weeks.
