Pep Guardiola Calls Season 2024-25 To Be His Toughest One Yet

Manchester City Boss Reflects on a Challenging Campaign Marked by Injuries, Form Dips, and Early Exits.

Pep Guardiola has described the 2024–25 campaign as the most demanding and toughest season of his managerial career. Pep has had a history of success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City. He has even won two trebles – one with Barcelona and another with Man City. Even so, as per the coach this season has tested him like no other.

City’s struggles this season include an early exit from the Champions League and a faltering Premier League title defense. There was even a particularly tough period when they saw only a single win in 13 matches across all competitions. Injuries to key players like Rodri and Erling Haaland compounded the challenges.

Thus, leading to inconsistent performances. Pep Guardiola acknowledged the emotional toll it has taken on him, stating: “It’s been the most difficult, that’s for sure. It’s been more demanding—much more. When you don’t win, it’s more demanding emotionally and in terms of preparing and the moods and everything.”

Struggles With Form and Injuries

In their 13-game spell between October and December, Man City only registered one win and nine defeats, derailing City’s campaign. Guardiola highlighted injuries as a major factor. Especially that off the injury of a key figure, like Rodri. Pep said, “We had a lot of injuries, we didn’t have the energy. We tried most of the time but were not able to do it.”

Even after that poor run, inconsistency continued. A defeat to Nottingham Forest in March marked their 15th loss in 30 matches at the time. Talking about the teams’ downfall, Pep said, “You have to do your job as best as possible and, this season, we didn’t do that. We dropped from the highest standards.”

Emotional Toll and Personal Accountability

Guardiola, especially known for his relentless pursuit of excellence, has acknowledged the emotional strain of a season without major success. “When you don’t win, it’s more demanding emotionally, preparing, and the moods and everything. I’m disappointed in myself when it’s not going well. I have to prove myself again and again. Life doesn’t live from memories.”

Despite the setbacks, City remain in contention for a Champions League spot next season. They will also face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final. Guardiola said, “We didn’t give up. We’re still fighting.” He has also mentioned that they only a few matches left and if they keep winning, they can confirm a spot in Champions League next season. Guardiola already has a contract signed on until 2027. Along with a tough season, Pep Guardiola had also been struggling in his personal life.
