Pedri Injury Update: How Long Will Barcelona Be Without Their Star Midfielder?

Moumita Dutta

Barcelona have been dealt another injury setback after El Clasico defeat. Star midfielder Pedri has been ruled out for an extended period after sustaining a hamstring tear during their 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid. The club recently confirmed the unfortunate injury he sustained.

The statement read that the 22-year-old suffered a tear in the distal biceps femoris muscle of his left thigh. It has been a recurring problem area for the Spaniard. Barcelona refrained from specifying a return date. They stated that “the player’s recovery will dictate his return to action.”

The timing could hardly be worse for Hansi Flick’s side. He is already facing a growing injury list. Pedri’s absence follows setbacks for Gavi, Raphinha, and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo were also suffering injuries. However, both have recently returned to training.

How Long Will Pedri Be Out For?

Pedri’s workload has been immense this season. He has featured in 72 of the 73 matches under Flick’s management. That is more than any other player in the squad. His importance is evident in both statistics and performance. He has created 29 chances in 13 appearances.

Pedri has also registered two goals, two assists, and over 1,000 completed passes so far this campaign. He has proven himself to be Barcelona’s most creative outlet. However, this relentless playing schedule appears to have taken its toll. The midfielder was visibly exhausted during El Clasico.

He was later seen training indoors rather than joining the group session on the pitch. Reports in Spain suggest the midfielder could miss around four to five weeks. Though a cautious approach from the medical staff could see him return after the international break.

It could potentially sideline him for key matches against Club Brugge in the Champions League and Celta Vigo in La Liga before the international break. The injury mirrors previous hamstring issues that sidelined him for over three months in the 2021-22 season.

What’s Next for Barcelona?

Pedri’s absence leaves a major void in midfield for Flick. The coach now must rely on Frenkie de Jong, Fermin Lopez and other academy talents to manage upcoming fixtures. Barcelona are also sitting second in La Liga, five points behind leaders Real Madrid. In pursuit of the league title, the club remains hopeful that Pedri’s recovery will progress smoothly.
