The World No. 9 finds herself in the same quarter as Sabalenka.
Paula Badosa knew one thing with complete certainty on Thursday – that she would be facing a Kudermetova in the Round of 64. When Veronika Kudermetova beat her younger sister Polina in their first meeting on the WTA Tour, she booked her spot to battle the No. 9 seed in the Mutua Madrid Open 2025. The winner will set up a blockbuster Round-3 clash with either Emma Raducanu or Marta Kostyuk.
One of the major roadblocks in the career of Spanish star Paula Badosa has been injuries. A swashbuckling athlete otherwise, physical issues have played spoilsport in multiple crucial junctures of her career. Nonetheless, the Spaniard has already reached her first Grand Slam semifinal in 2025, and is only looking to improve. Yet to reach a final this year, the 27-year-old will hope that her home crowd can push her over the line.
28-year-old Veronika Kudermetova is a former Top-10 WTA player who is currently ranked No. 52 in the world. Her best results of the year came in the Australian swing at the onset of the new season – she reached the quarterfinals in Hobart, before making it to the Round of 16 at the Australian Open. Owing to her compact game style and deceptive power, she is a Roland Garros quarterfinalist (2022) and Wimbledon doubles finalist (2021).
Veronika Kudermetova leads the head to head rivalry against Paula Badosa by 4-2 so far. This equates to a winning rate of 66.7% in total.
The first match when Paula Badosa faced Kudermetova was back in 2019, when the Russian was ranked higher than her Spanish counterpart. They met in the qualifying rounds of Indian Wells. It is interesting to note that only one out of six battles between the players has gone to a deciding set. In their most recent encounter at Roland Garros 2022, Badosa was forced to retire midway.

While Badosa had to retire from the Roland Garros match-up, the two players have split the other two encounters played on clay. However, the Spanish powerhouse has the edge on Friday – purely because of her serving form and the venue. Court Manolo Santana will do everything possible to pump up the former World No. 2 and ensure that she sustains her level against an able clay courter.
Prediction: Paula Badosa in three sets.
Paula Badosa Win: 10/11
Veronika Kudermetova Win: 5/6
