Packers Sign Zach Tom to a 4-Year, $88 Million Extension – What To Make of His Landmark Contract?

The latest contract extension to be wrapped up in a flurry of deals taking place across the NFL is that of Green Bay Packers’ offensive lineman, Zach Tom. The Packers’ right tackle signed his new extension worth up to $92 million over the next four years.

Despite Tom playing on the right side, this is still a massive deal for the 26-year-old. In today’s game, more and more players are rushing to the quarterback from the right side, and thus the market for right tackles has also gone up.

Zach Tom Contract Details

The highlight of this deal comes from the fact that Tom’s contract consists of a $30.2 million signing bonus, which is the largest-ever for any offensive tackle. While the contract is worth up to $92 million, it comes with a base of $88 million. The remaining $4 million is most likely to be in the form of incentives.

Tom’s latest extension is similar to the one that the Chiefs signed with Trey Smith just recently. The Kansas City lineman signed a 4-year deal worth $94 million; however, he only received a $17 million signing bonus.

The catch here is that despite Tom receiving a huge signing bonus, his guaranteed money also remains at $30.2 million. Taking into account his base, the 2022 draftee will earn $22 million annually.

Why Has Green Bay Rewarded Tom Generously?

Despite the fact that Tom has not made a Pro Bowl or been honored with an All-Pro selection in his three years in the league, there is enough evidence to prove that he is one of the better right tackles in the game today.

As per the stats on PFF, Tom received an 87.5 overall blocking grade, placing him 4th among all tackles. His run-blocking grade of 90 placed him at the 3rd position, while he was 12th among tackles with an 82.1 pass blocking grade.

As mentioned previously, more and more pass rushers are now attacking the quarterback from his right side, and not just the blind side. As a result of which, Tom, who is set to go up against the likes of Aidan Hutchinson, Micah Parsons, Trey Hendrickson, T.J. Watt, and more, will have his work cut out for him. The Packers have realized the value Tom provides as he goes up against the strong, athletic, and versatile edge rushers, which has led to his massive extension.

Tom, who was entering the final year of his contract, will now remain in Green Bay for the next four years, which means he will become a free agent in 2030. If their 2022 fourth-round pick can replicate his form over the next few years, the Packers will have a solid blocker allowing Jordan Love to work his magic.
