Ousmane Dembele Injury Update: How Many Matches Will the PSG Star Miss?

Paris Saint-Germain have been dealt a major blow with Ousmane Dembele sidelined for approximately six weeks. He sustained a serious right hamstring injury during France’s 2-0 win against Ukraine in the World Cup qualifiers on Saturday. The 28-year-old came on from the bench at halftime.

However, he soon limped off in the 81st minute, clutching his hamstring. The Ligue 1 champions later confirmed the diagnosis in an official statement: “Ousmane Dembele, who was forced off injured in the Ukraine-France match on Friday, has a severe right hamstring injury. He is expected to be out for around six weeks.”

Which Games Will Ousmane Dembele Miss?

The six-week recovery timeline means that Dembele will likely miss several crucial fixtures for PSG. This includes the Ligue 1 clash against Lens on September 14 and the high-profile Classique against Marseille on September 21. He is also expected to sit out PSG’s opening Champions League matches.

He is set to miss their first UCL match against Atalanta at home and second match against Barcelona on the road. Depending on his recovery, the forward could additionally miss the trip to Bayer Leverkusen and other domestic games during this period. Here are the games he is sure to miss –

The French star had an exceptional 2023-24 season. He registered 35 goals and 16 assists across 53 appearances. Dembele helped the club win their first Champions League title. He also started the current season strongly, with two goals and an assist in three Ligue 1 games. He also got an assist in the Super Cup win against Tottenham.

Controversy Over Didier Deschamps’ Decision

PSG’s management is reportedly furious with France coach Didier Deschamps for risking Dembele. He had experienced minor discomfort in his left hamstring during a previous club match against Toulouse. Deschamps defended his decision, stating:

“I was sure that he was capable of playing a high-level match, otherwise I would not have played him. This time, it is the other thigh… He was fit. It is unfortunate for him but could have happened to another player.” Dembele’s absence is stretching into a congested schedule for PSG, causing further problems for them.
