Andre Onana Future at Manchester United at an End? Loan Move Awaits

Manchester United and Trabzonspor have reached a verbal agreement for Andre Onana to join the Turkish club on loan. The goalkeeper is open to completing the deal before Turkey’s transfer window closes on Friday. According to reports, only final details remain before the move is confirmed.

Onana is now expected to travel to Turkey to finalize the switch. The 29-year-old Cameroonian joined Man United from Inter Milan in 2023 for an initial £43.8m. Since then, he has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford. A string of errors and a recent hamstring injury saw him lose his starting place.

His only appearance this season came in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby. In that clash, the Red Devils crashed out on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time. Onana was at fault for both goals, which further dented his standing. Altay Bayindir has been preferred in the league so far.

Bayindir started all three games this season. Additionally, United’s late acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for €21m has pushed Onana further down the pecking order. With Tom Heaton also in the squad, Onana now faces the prospect of becoming the third-choice goalkeeper under Ruben Amorim.

Fresh Opportunity for Andre Onana

Onana was initially reluctant to leave Old Trafford. However, as per recent reports, he has accepted that a loan move could be the best option for him as he will get regular playing time. Renowned journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move deal on Sunday.

He mentioned that the player has agreed to join Trabzonspor for the rest of the campaign. The deal is a straight loan without an option to buy. This means that Man United will reassess his future next summer. A season-long stint in Turkey could allow Onana to regain confidence.

It could also help him stay match-fit ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, where he is expected to represent Cameroon. However, his departure leaves the Red Devils in a potentially precarious situation. Bayindir has made only seven Premier League appearances and remains error-prone.

With veteran Heaton having last played top-flight football in 2020, Lammens is likely to become their first-choice goalkeeper. If Trabzonspor decide to make the move permanent later, fresh negotiations with United would be required. Onana’s current contract runs for three more years, with an additional 12-month extension clause.
