‘Our Position in the Table Says It All’ – Manchester United Boss Ruben Amorin Tries To Stay Positive Despite Underwhelming Season

Ruben Amorim Defends His Struggling Manchester United Side After a Heavy Loss at Newcastle, Urges Focus Ahead of Crucial Europa League Tie.

Manchester United’s dismal Premier League season continues with their most recet 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday. The loss marked their 14th of the campaign. This matches their total amount of losses from last season but his term, they still have six matches to play.

For manager Ruben Amorim, who took charge in November, this was his side’s heaviest defeat yet. The Red Devils were level at the break after Bruno Fernandes cancelled out Alexander Isak’s opener in the first half. However, they collapsed horribly in the second half.

Harvey Barnes netted twice and Bruno Guimaraes added a fourth. An error from their debutant goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and from another defensive error led to the goals. Following the match, Amorim told Premier League Productions:

“It was a little bit of everything. It’s hard to point to one thing going wrong at this moment. Many mistakes. Newcastle were stronger in second balls. We did a lot of mistakes that made it harder to win a game.”

Amorim Urges Focus Ahead of Lyon Clash

Despite the criticism piling on, Amorim stood firm, saying, “I understand [criticism], but I don’t care. Nothing is worse than losing games. People can say whatever they want to say. I don’t want to defend myself or anything like that. If you look at our position in the table, it says it all.”

Now 14th in the Premier League table, Man United are staring down the barrel of their worst-ever Premier League finish. However they still have one hope of winning the silverware, in the UEFA Europa League. In their Europa League quarter-final first leg away match against Lyon they ended the match in a 2-2 draw.

United host the French side at Old Trafford on Thursday. Amorim remains optimistic despite the domestic woes as he said, “Let’s focus on Thursday. All the mistakes we did today we cannot do Thursday.” A win over Lyon would send United to the semifinals, where they could face Rangers or Athletic Bilbao.

If they keep progressing, they could potentially face Tottenham Hotspur in the final. With Champions League qualification now only realistically possible via winning the Europa League, Thursday’s match is truly make-or-break for Amorim and his underperforming side.
