The Timberwolves need better guard play

The Wolves looked rusty after an extended break post the Golden State Warriors series win. Meanwhile, the Thunder, which had a day off, looked in perfect rhythm. They trailed by 4 points in the first half, but saved their best for the third quarter like any great team.

The second half was an embarrassment for Minnesota. The Thunder outscored them by 30 points as the visitors had a bad shooting game. The Timberwolves may have settled for too many long-range jumpers, attempting 51 from deep while connecting on just 15 (29%).

Meanwhile, the Thunder attempted just 21 and nailed an impressive 11 triples (51%).  They made 16 more two-pointers and six more free throws for an efficient shooting night.

The Thunder forced 17 turnovers (while committing 12), too, which made a huge difference. Edwards scored below the expectations for the third straight series opener. Only Julius Randle had a significant offensive imprint for Minnesota with 28 points (9-13 FG).

Naz Reid had a horrible 0/7 shooting night from outside, and the Thunder’s perimeter defense shut down the shooting game completely.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had his routine 31-point outburst while Isaiah Hartenstein, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren scored in the 12-19 range. Overall, the Thunder showed their best on both ends, while the opposite holds true for the Timberwolves.

The first game produced 212 points, and the bookmakers nailed their projections of the mid-210s. I chose Under for the total but barely got the prediction right, while my pick of Thunder scoring under 110 failed to convert. On the other hand, I didn’t expect Minnesota to score less than 90. 

The bookmakers have stuck to the projections similar to Game 1, allotting near identical odds to a total of around 214. I chose Under last time, but this time I will choose Over. I also expect the Timberwolves to improve their scoring to 105+.

Julius Randle to score over 20.5 points: Randle has been in a tremendous rhythm throughout the postseason. He has been “Over” the stipulated projections in five straight games now, and I see him repeating his heroics.

Anthony Edwards to make over 3.5 triples: Edwards was restricted to just three triples by the Thunder defense. He had made 5 or more in three straight games before that. However, I see him nailing 4-6 here again.

Jaden McDaniels to score over 12.5 points: McDaniels attempted just 5 shots in the previous game and made 3 of those for 7 points. He went over the projections in three of the four gams before that, and I see him scoring at least 13 here.

The Thunder completely shut down the Timberwolves in Game 1, not allowing them to score more than 25 in any quarter. Meanwhile, they had two 30+ quarters in the second half. Thus, the Wolves have their work cut out.

I selected them to clear the spread by around 5 points in Game 1, 2 points above the stipulated mark by the bookmakers. Of course, I was proven thoroughly wrong as the bookmakers were right about Thunder’s dominance.

However, I’ll stick with my Game 1 projection and believe the Timberwolves will be in terrific rhythm.
