The Denver Nuggets have triggered a major offseason trade by sending Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets. The power forward remained one of their crucial players in the playoffs this season. However, with Aaron Gordon stepping up and being the center of spotlight, the Nuggets have made their decision clear.

Denver has sent Porter Jr. and a 2032 unprotected first-rounder to Brooklyn in exchange for forward Cam Johnson. This marks one of the biggest moves within hours of the free agency coming into effect.

Michael Porter Jr. was on a designated rookie extension contract worth $179,299 till the 2026-27 season. The 27-year-old averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists over his career at the Denver Nuggets which began after the side picked him at the 2018 NBA draft.

Porter Jr. elevated his game in 2024–25, averaging a career-best 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while shooting 50.4% from the field. Many reports believe that Nikola Jokic pushed the management to make some big offseason moves.

Nuggets Rebuild Spacing with Johnson Addition

The Denver Nuggets have received Cam Johnson in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. The 29-year-old was desperate to part ways with the Brooklyn Nets. Back in January, Johnson’s name had surfaced in trade talks involving Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga, but a deal never materialized.

Denver’s front office has been intent on adding perimeter shooting to ease the scoring load on Nikola Jokic. The deep threat would relieve pressure from Jokic who is constantly double guarded at the perimeter.

Cam Johnson in the 2024-25 season averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. He is known for his three point shooting averaging 39.2 percent. While Porter Jr. brought size and rebounding, Johnson offers a more dynamic threat from beyond the arc, something Denver has been lacking.
