The 2025 US Open entry list has been declared, and one name stands out as a surprise entry following months of absence from the tour. Australia’s Nick Kyrgios is expected to make his first appearance at the US Open after a hiatus of three years.

As per reports, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist has used his protected ranking to enter this year’s US Open, which is set to take place in the final week of August. The highly polarizing yet talented tennis player is expected to return to the courts at the upcoming Washington Open, in preparation for the big event at Flushing Meadows.

This will be his first appearance in New York since 2022.

Host of Injuries Derailed Kyrgios’ Tennis Career

The last time Kyrgios had a decent season on tour was in 2022. That year, he made a return to the top 20 and had his best results at Wimbledon and the US Open. After losing the Wimbledon final in 4 sets to Novak Djokovic, the Australian lost in the quarterfinals of the US Open to Karen Khachanov in a tight 5-set match.

2023 started with an ankle injury, and after that, he suffered multiple other injuries, such as a knee, foot, and a ligament tear in the wrist during a practice session at Wimbledon. It is the latter that has plagued him for the past couple of years, limiting his time on the court and resulting in long durations of recovery.

The wrist injury caused Kyrgios to sit out the remainder of the 2023 season and most of the 2024 season. Even though he tried to return to action in between, the wrist was never completely pain-free, and he has been dealing with the issue ever since.

Kyrgios in 2025

So far in 2025, the Australian has played only 5 singles matches on tour and holds a 1-4 record. He lost in his first round matches at Brisbane, the Australian Open, and at Indian Wells, before scoring his first win of the year over Mackenzie McDonald in Miami. However, he lost in the very next round to Karen Khachanov.

The 30-year-old has not participated in any more tournaments after the Miami Masters in mid-March, and even missed out on Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year. However, it seems as though his wrist is feeling better, considering he is expected to make a return to the tour in the upcoming days.

Despite being named on the entry list in New York, there is still a chance that Kyrgios does not play. He can still withdraw from the event if his injury does not hold up. However, if he does play, he will not be seeded and thus could even end up facing one of the top players in the first round of the 2025 US Open.

In the meantime, Kyrgios has been back and forth on his future, contemplating retirement from the game. He has been keeping busy with commentary for ESPN and the Tennis Channel, especially at some of the more important events. If he does decide to call it an end, perhaps full-time commentating will be the next career move for the Australian player.
