NHL Considers New Format for 2026 All-Star Game at UBS Arena

Commissioner Gary Bettman hints at changes to the All-Star Game, possibly reshaping the event before NHL players head to the 2026 Winter Olympics.

As NHL general managers gather in Florida to discuss the future of the game, Commissioner Gary Bettman addressed the media on Wednesday, touching on various topics, including potential changes to the 2026 All-Star Game format.

According to hockey insider Frank Seravalli, Bettman acknowledged that the league is reconsidering how the All-Star Weekend will unfold. He noted that the recent 4 Nations Face-Off tournament set a new standard for high-stakes international hockey, prompting the NHL to rethink its approach. While no decisions have been made, Bettman emphasized that all options are on the table, including a possible complete overhaul of the event.

The 2026 NHL All-Star Game is set to take place at UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders. What makes this edition unique is its timing—occurring just before the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. It marks the first time NHL players will participate in the Olympics since the 2014 Sochi Games. When the All-Star event was first announced, Bettman hinted at using it as a “sendoff” for the Olympic-bound players, with Team USA and Team Canada stars leaving straight from New York to Milan.

The most recent All-Star Game in Toronto in 2024 followed a four-team, three-on-three format, mixed with a fantasy draft element. This will be the first time in over four decades that the Islanders will host an NHL All-Star Game. The last time the event was held on Long Island was in 1983, when hockey legends like Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin, Ray Bourque, Mike Bossy, and Ron Francis graced the ice.

With NHL’s growing interest in international tournaments and competitive hockey, the 2026 All-Star Game could take on a fresh new look.
