Edmonton suffers another setback as Connor McDavid leaves with a lower-body injury, adding to the absence of Leon Draisaitl in a 4-3 OT loss.
Already dealing with the absence of star forward Leon Draisaitl, the Edmonton Oilers suffered another major blow on Thursday as captain Connor McDavid left the game with a lower-body injury. The Oilers fought hard but ultimately fell 4-3 in overtime to the Winnipeg Jets.
McDavid was injured in the second period and did not return for the third or overtime. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch had no immediate update on his condition. To make matters worse, goaltender Stuart Skinner was also forced to leave late in the third after a collision with Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi, leading to concussion protocol concerns.
Draisaitl was already sidelined due to an undisclosed injury sustained in Tuesday’s dominant 7-1 win over the Utah Hockey Club. Losing McDavid mid-game only added to the team’s struggles. The Oilers captain took a regular shift early in the second period but played just 18 seconds on his final shift before heading to the bench, where he was seen speaking with head athletic therapist T.D. Forss.

Despite his early exit, McDavid still made an impact, recording an assist to extend his point streak to 13 games (four goals, 15 assists). He now has 90 points (26 goals, 64 assists) in 63 games this season. This isn’t the first time McDavid has missed time this year—he previously sat out three games due to an ankle injury suffered in a loss to Columbus on Oct. 28. Additionally, he served a three-game suspension in January after a cross-checking incident involving Conor Garland.
With their two biggest stars sidelined, the Oilers now face uncertainty heading into their next games. Skinner, who left in the third, later mentioned that the team had time to adjust their approach during intermission, knowing McDavid wouldn’t return. However, playing without both McDavid and Draisaitl presents a significant challenge for the Oilers as they push toward the playoffs.
All eyes will be on updates regarding McDavid’s condition as Edmonton fans anxiously await news on their captain’s health.
