NFL Analyst Rips Cowboys’ DC Matt Eberflus Amid Defensive Woes

The Dallas Cowboys’ 2025-26 season has been a tale of two units. Offensively, they rank among the NFL’s elite, averaging 29.6 points and 387.5 yards per game through six weeks. Dak Prescott’s precision passing, 1,617 yards, 13 touchdowns, and three interceptions through six games, has been a bright side to the Cowboys’ season, in otherwise what is a horrendous season. CeeDee Lamb has 16 receptions for 22 yards through two games before an ankle injury sidelined him.

Defensively, however, Matt Eberflus’ unit ranks 32nd, allowing 411.7 yards and 30.7 points per game, with a 30-27 Week 6 loss to Carolina exposing their 201 yards allowed on the ground. Despite the chaos, their owner Jerry Jones remains optimistic, stating, “We’re still in it,” as Dallas gears up for a Week 7 clash against the Commanders.

Stephen A. Smith Rips Dallas Cowboys and DC Matt Eberflus for Their Defense

ESPN’s NFL analyst Stephen A. Smith wastes no time when it comes to making fun of the Dallas Cowboys, and every time he gets an opportunity, he makes sure to take full advantage of it.

On ESPN’s show, First Take, Stephen A. Smith mocked the Cowboys and their defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus for their 32nd ranked defense, the worst of any team in the NFL.

“Dallas Cowboys, their defense is that bad. Their defense is so bad, you shouldn’t have names on the back of their jerseys, on the defensive side of the ball. You should be hiding. It might compromise you business wise.” Smith said. “Could you imagine having a resume right now, going and trying to get a job saying that I played for the Dallas Cowboys defense? Could you imagine that?”

“I mean if Jerry Jones is that confident that Matt Eberflus is the answer… Well tell Matt Eberflus to take his resume with Dallas this year and think that’s gonna give him a job in the NFL. He’d be lucky to have an assistant’s job, let alone a coordinators’ job.”

If the Cowboys have any hopes of reaching the playoffs this season, they need to at least, somehow, get to top 20 in defense. Teams like the Bears and Panthers, have all pulled a win against Dallas this season, large in part due to their horrible defense.
