Newcastle United vs. Brentford – Injury News, Match Preview and Predicted Line-Ups

Newcastle United have the fate of European qualifications in their hand this season. With trailing by two points to the fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand, the Magpies are currently favourites to qualify for the Champions League.

Newcastle will host Brentford at St. James’ Park as their next contest in the Premier League. Eddie Howe who suffered a 4-2 defeat in the reverse fixture will look to make things even as they chase a bigger prize. Moreover, they will come in with thriving confidence after lifting the EFL Cup in March.

Brentford, who are currently 11th on the Premier League table, have had a mixed season. Losing seven away games, their record away from home has separated them from the elites. It will be a test for Thomas Frank and his side as they visit Newcastle for their 30th matchday.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon sustained a knock on England’s International duty. Confirming his getting back to fitness in the pre-match conference, manager Howe said:

“He has some nasty bruising around his thigh but he’s up and running and feeling quite good. He’s not trained with the group yet, so we anticipate he’ll do that within the next few days.”

This rules out the possibility of Gordon lining up against Brentford. Moreover, Sven Botman underwent a minor surgery and will be out for weeks as per Howe. Continuing on the Newcastle Team News, he added:

“Sven’s not too bad. He’s had a very minor operation just to clean out some floating bone that was in his knee and was causing him a problem. The initial diagnosis was between six and eight weeks but I think he’s already got through a few of those. Fingers crossed we’ll see him in May.”

Newcastle in the absence of Gordon might give the nod to Harvey Barnes from the left side again. Howe is expected to stick to their standard 4-3-3 as they host Brentford on Thursday.

Brentford will have some injury boosts ahead of their clash against Newcastle United. With confirming the availability of fullback Michael Kayode for selection, manager Frank in the pre-match conference said:

“The squad looks quite positive. Michael Kayode is back in, but Mathi [Jensen] is not ready yet. There was some illness there, which means he has missed some training.”

Ruling out striker Igor Thiago and midfielder Josh Dasilva, Frank also added on their recovery by saying, “Thiago is progressing, going a little bit slower, but progressing. Josh Dasilva is a little bit further off it than Igor.”

Brentford who have lined up in their standard 4-2-3-1 formation is expected to retain their shape. With Kayode ready to return, Frank might also switch things on the defensive end if called upon.
