Newcastle Overcomes Trophy Drought Of 70 Years With Carabao Cup Win Over Liverpool

The Magpies Triumph at Wembley, Clinching Their First Domestic Silverware Since 1955 With a 2–1 Victory Over Liverpool.

A dream come true moment for Newcastle United was in the cards as they finally put an end to their 70-year-long domestic trophy drought last night. They got a historic 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak secured the win for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe’s boys outperformed Liverpool in a major way, with more energy and attacking prowess. Burn, who was still celebrating his recent England call-up, opened the scoring with a towering header from Kieran Trippier’s corner. Isak doubled the lead early in the second half, clinically finishing from Jacob Murphy’s knockdown.

Liverpool pulled one back through Federico Chiesa in injury time but it wasn’t enough. Their painful week came to an end with this after they were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG earlier this week. The final whistle couldn’t come soon enough for the fans who burst out in wild celebrations as soon as it came.

Newcastle’s Trophy Drought

The last time Newcastle United won a domestic trophy was back in 1955 when they lifted the FA Cup. Since then, the Magpies have spent decades with near misses and heartbreaks. The numerous disappointments came from multiple lost finals and underwhelming league campaigns throughout the years.

Teams like Southampton, Ipswich Town, or West Ham – all have respective trophy droughts going on for 50, 47, and 45 years. However, the Magpies’ 70-year-long barren run had become the longest among the top-flight English clubs. Now the Magpies’ moment of glory has to come as inspiring for all.

Their most recent major silverware before this EFL Cup win was the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup or currently known as the UEFA Europa League. However, Newcastle remained without a trophy for nearly seven decades on the domestic front. Thus, making this trophy win one of their most significant ones in history.

Newcastle’s Last Domestic Trophy and Last Final Appearance

Newcastle’s last domestic trophy – the 1955 FA Cup win saw them defeat Manchester City by a 3-1 margin in front of more than 100,000 fans at Wembley. The Magpies have a rich history in the tournament. They’ve won it six times, despite the recent decades-long break.

They managed to reach the finals of major domestic tournaments several times without winning them. Their most recent final appearance before this year came back in the 2023 Carabao Cup. They fell short against Manchester United that time, losing by a 2-0 margin.

That defeat became their ninth consecutive loss at Wembley. Tenth time became the charm for them under the guidance of Eddie Howe. The club’s resurgence under the coach, along with their recent takeover, seems to have been fruitful for the side. With this win, Newcastle have also secured European football for next season, adding another milestone to their resurgence under Howe.
