Newcastle Eye Move for Unsettled Man United Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo

Newcastle United are monitoring the situation of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The midfielder has been growing increasingly unsettled this season at Old Trafford. The England international was eager to leave before transfer deadline day after falling out of favour under manager Ruben Amorim.

However, United rejected all the approaches for their academy graduate. Despite that, Mainoo once again found himself on the bench during Sunday’s 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City. According to reports, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is a long-time admirer of the 20-year-old and could test United’s resolve in January if Mainoo continues to be sidelined.

The report suggests that even some United players are puzzled by Amorim’s reluctance to use Kobbie Mainoo. The midfielder famously scored the winner in the 2024 FA Cup final and started for England in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin. This season, however, Mainoo has played just 73 minutes of Premier League football and has only one start to his name, in the shock EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

Kobbie Mainoo Desperate for Regular Game Time

With the 2026 World Cup looming, the youngster is desperate for regular game time to stay in Gareth Southgate’s plans for England. Newcastle are looking to strengthen their midfield options in the January transfer window. As a result, the Magpies could offer Kobbie Mainoo the platform he craves.

Mainoo’s lack of minutes comes despite being one of the standout performers for United last year, where he was tipped as one of the brightest prospects in English football. With Bruno Fernandes firmly established in midfield and United manager Ruben Amorim favouring a different system, Mainoo is struggling to reclaim his place. If Amorim remains reluctant to give him opportunities in the coming months, a move to St James’ Park might be on the horizon.
