What are the New York Liberty's chances to make it to the playoffs? Let's find out.
The WNBA 2025 season is gradually proceeding towards its next stage- the postseason. After the completion of regular season games, action will shift to the playoffs, scheduled to begin on September 14. All 13 teams have pulled up their socks and are in no mood to leave any stone unturned to grab a playoff berth.
The reigning champions, the New York Liberty, will aim to repeat the 2024 feat and become one of the few teams to win back-to-back championships. But what are the chances of them to even make it to the postseason? Let’s find out.
The New York Liberty got off to a remarkable start in the 2025 season. They were coming off their championship season, and were clearly high on confidence. They won nine back-to-back games before the Indiana Fever handed them their first defeat of the season. Since then it has been a roller-coaster season for the defending champions. However, even then, the Liberty continued their dominance on their rivals, and they are currently in the second spot of the standings.
They have recorded 22 wins and 15 defeats with a .595 percentage. They are on a two-game losing skid, both defeats came at the hands of below-seeded teams. After suffering an embarrassing 91-85 defeat to the Chicago Sky, they were blown up by the Atlanta Dream. Overall in their last ten games, they registered five wins and suffered five defeats. Not only this, but they have been pushed down to the third spot by the Atlanta Dream.
Talking about their remainder of the 2025 campaign, the Liberty have seven games, and they are most likely to bounce back and get into their dominating momentum.
As mentioned, the Liberty have been ruling the standings ever since the beginning of the 2025 season. They are yet to play seven more games in this season. However, the Liberty have already set themselves up as one of the strongest contenders for the coveted title. They are second seeded, and with a 19-10 record, boast 99.9% chances to make it to the playoffs, according to ESPN’s WNBA Basketball Power Index (BPI).
Though it is just a strong possibility and nothing is certain as of now. A losing skid could also see the top three teams (Minnesota Lynx, Liberty, Atlanta Dream) fall from the top, but it is a highly unlikely scenario. The Liberty is expected to wrap up their campaign with around 28-29 wins.
