“Needs a year to recover from this” – Boris Becker Shares Honest Opinion on Jannik Sinner’s Roland Garros Agony

While talking on the latest episode of Andrea Petkovic's podcast, Boris Becker commented on the iconic Roland Garros final.

World no. 1 Jannik Sinner was recently involved in one of the biggest Grand Slam finals and faced a heartbreak in a five-set thriller. It was the 2025 Roland Garros final where the Italian Ace failed to win the title despite having three championship points. The defeat against Carlos Alcaraz will surely be a most brutal loss in his young career.

The defending champion Carlos Alcaraz snatched a victory from the jaws of the defeat. The Spaniard was two-set down in the game and in the final set, he saved three match points to clinch the trophy. The Roland Garros final lasted for five hours and 29 minutes, the longest final in the history of the competition. Chasing his third consecutive Grand Slam title, Sinner was on the losing side on last Sunday’s epic final.

Boris Becker Feels Roland Garros Defeat will Affect Jannik Sinner for Another Year

Reflecting on the 2025 French Open final, Boris Becker talked about Jannik Sinner’s performance and acknowledged the impressive Grand Slam campaign of the Italian ace. The former German tennis star admitted that Sinner will not recover from the defeat easily. The world No. 1 will take another year to move on from the Roland Garros final where he squandered three match points.

While talking on the latest episode of Andrea Petkovic’s podcast, Boris Becker commented on the iconic Roland Garros final, saying without frills: “Sinner needs a year to recover from this. Until, he’s back on this court, at this tournament. Even if he plays well until then, this defeat will still be affecting him for another year.”

The former world No. 1 also shared an example form his career and talked how a player takes a time to recover form such defeats. “It happened to me twice, first against Edberg and then against Stitch. It takes time to recover from certain defeats,” Becker said.

Boris Becker has his own opinion but we can understand the mindset of Jannik Sinner, who had a chance to win the Roland Garros for the first time but fell short against Alcaraz’s resilience. The Italian ace never lost a final before in the Grand Slam and it was first experience for him. However, these thing happen in tennis players’ career where they lose the championship from a winning situation.

In 2019 Wimbledon final, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer played out one of the finest Grand Slam finals where the Serbian ace had the last laugh. Federer had two championship points at 8-7, 40/15 on serve, in the final set that lasted two hours and two minutes. In the end, Djokovic won the match 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4), 4-6, 13-12(3). It was the first time since the 1948 Wimbledon final when a player had been championship points down and won.

Jannic Sinner had a similar experience in the 2025 Roland Garros final but Federer was in his final years of the career and Sinner has just started his career. The Italian ace will get so many chances to win the French Open and might be against the same opponent, Carlos Alcaraz as currently, these two are the best tennis players. Sinner will now be in action in the Wimbledon 2025, scheduled to start on June 30.
