RJ Luis Jr.
Reggie Jason “RJ” Luis Jr., born on November 27, 2002, in Miami, Florida, USA, is an American professional basketball player with dual American and Dominican nationality. He also has Ecuadorian ancestry on his mother’s side, Verito Luis, while his father, Reggie Luis Charles, is Dominican. Luis has two younger sisters, Racheal and Rylee. He is 2.01 m (6 feet 7 inches) tall and weighs 98 kg (215 lb), and plays as a shooting guard or small forward.
Luis began his collegiate basketball career with the UMass Minutemen, where he played in the 2022-2023 season. During that period, he appeared in 27 games, starting 10, and earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Freshman Team. After his freshman year, Luis entered the NCAA transfer portal and subsequently transferred to St. John’s University, where he played for the St. John’s Red Storm from 2023 to 2025. In the 2023-2024 season, he appeared in 23 games, making 10 starts. His 2024-2025 season was particularly notable; he appeared in 35 games, starting 32, and earned significant accolades. He was named a Consensus Second Team All-American by the Associated Press, becoming St. John’s 12th consensus All-American and the first since Ron Artest in 1999. He was also the third Johnnie to earn BIG EAST Player of the Year, the first since Walter Berry in 1986. Other honors included First-team All-Big East, Big East Tournament MOP, and the Haggerty Award. Important performances during this season included 21 points and seven rebounds in a victory over UConn on February 7, 2025, 21 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists in a victory over #24 Creighton on February 16, 2025, and 21 points with six rebounds in a victory over Seton Hall on March 1, 2025, to secure the Big East championship.
In 2025, RJ Luis Jr. was not selected in the NBA draft. After that, he was waived by an NBA team on October 15, before the start of the season. He then signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Maine Celtics, the NBA G League affiliate of the Boston Celtics, where he has been playing since 2025. Some recent news from October 2025 indicates that St. John’s men’s basketball held a press conference and an exhibition game against Towson, which Luis was part of during his time with the Red Storm.
