Cardwell attended Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, and McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia. After high school, he committed to play college basketball for the Auburn Tigers over other schools such as Georgia, Tennessee, Miami, Maryland, and UConn, being rated as a three-star recruit. He played for Auburn from 2020 to 2025.
