Derrick Jones Jr.
Derrick Jones Jr. (born February 15, 1997) is an American professional basketball player known for his athleticism and spectacular dunks. Hailing from Chester, Pennsylvania, Jones attended Archbishop Carroll High School, where he quickly became a standout player. His incredible jumping ability and defensive prowess earned him considerable attention from college recruiters.
After a successful high school career, Jones committed to playing college basketball for the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. During his freshman season at UNLV (2015-2016), he showcased his versatile skill set, averaging 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. Despite his impressive individual performance, the team struggled, and Jones decided to declare for the NBA draft after just one season. His decision was influenced by the opportunity to pursue his professional aspirations and the potential to develop his game at the highest level.
Jones went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, which often serves as a significant hurdle for aspiring professional basketball players. However, his journey did not end there. He quickly found an opportunity to prove his worth by joining the Sacramento Kings for the 2016 NBA Summer League. Following his Summer League stint, Jones signed with the Phoenix Suns. He spent time with both the Suns’ NBA roster and their G-League affiliate, the Northern Arizona Suns, during the 2016-2017 season. In December 2017, Jones was waived by the Suns but was quickly signed by the Miami Heat, a move that would prove crucial for his career. He became a fan favorite in Miami, largely due to his spectacular dunks.
A significant moment in Jones’ career came during the 2020 NBA All-Star Weekend, where he participated in and ultimately won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Following his successful stint with the Miami Heat, Jones signed with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2020.
