Defending NBA champions ended the 15-game winning streak of the Cavaliers, the second-longest winning streak in history. Jasun Tatum’s 33-point performance with 12 rebounds led the Boston Celtics who had a 21-point advantage in the opening half. The Caves lost their first game of the season and the Celtics secured their third straight win. Boston had a 65-48 lead at the half-break. However, the Cavaliers dropped 40 points in the third to add some drama for the final quarter. Mitchell scored 35 points, and Evan Mobley hit 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Caves.

Nets 116 Hornets 115

Charlotte Hornets failed to hold their nerves to lose 116-115 on the road against the Brooklyn Nets. It was a toe-to-toe contest between two and the Hornets had a chance to overcome the deficit. Charlotte regained the lead in the dying phase of the final quarter. Brandon Miller missed a three-point jumper with 1.1 seconds left and the Hornets lost for the fourth time in five games. Cam Johnson scored 34 points while Dennis Schroder had 14 points and 12 assists to snap a three-game skid. Miller chipped in 29 points, and Miles Bridges added 21 for the Hornets. Tre Mann poured in 19 coming from the bench.

Grizzlies 110 Nuggets 122

Denver Nuggets denied the late comeback from Memphis to secure the first win of the NBA Cup this season. Russell Westbrook became the first player in NBA history to record 200 career triple-doubles. He ended the night with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists in 32 minutes. Jamal Murray led the Nuggets with 27 points, and Michael Porter Jr. added 24 points despite shooting 0 for 4 beyond the arc. Grizzlies had no answer in the first half and were 25 points behind at one stage. However, Memphis narrowed the deficit to five in the final two minutes. Dario Saric scored a 3-pointer with 27 seconds left assuring a big gap in the score. Santi Aldama scored 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who ended a 4-game winning streak at home.

Mavericks 132 Pelicans 91

Dallas Mavericks routed the Pelicans with a 41-point deficit to win a third straight game this season. The Mavericks recorded their highest point total of the season and largest margin of victory. Luka Doncic scored 26 points, contributing five rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Kyrie Irving chipped in 18 points, and Klay Thompson had 19 points, hitting five from beyond the arc. Trey Murphy III paced the Pelicans with 19 points and five rebounds. New Orleans was missing five of its rotation players and they remained clueless against Dallas. The Pelicans failed to cross 100 points four times out of last six and fell to 4-11.

Spurs 110 Thunder 104

San Antonio Spurs escaped the late comeback from the Thunder to secure their first win in the NBA Cup. Victor Wembanyama-less Spurs had momentum from the beginning but they charged in the third quarter to take a 93-77 lead. Keldon Johnson scored a game-high 22 points, while Harrison Barnes added 20 points. Chris Paul also contributed 14 points and 11 assists. Thunder had a 27-12 run in the final quarter but failed to score in crucial time. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paced Oklahoma City with 32 points and Jalen Williams added 27. Injury-hit Spurs improved to 7-8 and are 6-3 at home this season. Meanwhile, Thunder fell to 11-4 following a 7-0 start to the season.

Lakers 124 Jazz 118

Los Angeles Lakers extended their winning run to six matches with a 124-118 win over Utah Jazz who are 0-2 in group play this season. Dalton Knecht tied the NBA’s single-game rookie record with nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 37 points. LeBron James and Anthony Davis chipped in 26 points each. Austin Reaves added 17 points to maintain an unbeaten run at home. The Lakers had a 22-point advantage in the first three quarters. Utah dropped a record 43 points, third highest by a team this season but they couldn’t break the mountain of the deficit. Lauri Markkanen paced Jazz with 25 points and 8 rebounds. George, Clarkson and Collins chipped in 18 points each in the loss.
