JJ Redick of the Los Angeles Lakers has been amongst one of the best coaches of the NBA season.
Coaching in the NBA is about more than just drawing up plays. It’s also about leadership, strategy and getting the best out of the team. The coach of the year award recognizes those coaches who make the biggest impact on and off the field throughout the season.
JJ Redick of the Los Angeles Lakers has been amongst one of the best coaches of the NBA season. A team that was struggling to be above .500 in past seasons, now sits as the second seed in the West. In the month of February, Redick led the Lakers to a 10-2 record and in January, the Lakers had a 9-5 record. With an unbeaten start to the month of March, the Lakers face the New York Knicks on March 6.
Redick has climbed multiple spots in Coach of the Year awards as the Lakers continue to win. He is +3000 according to BetMGM and is the third favorite to win the award. The young coach has resurrected the Lakers’ defense in his first season. Despite losing Anthony Davis and a good perimeter defender in Max Christie, the Lakers have the best defensive rating in the league in the last 15 games.
Redick has also got the best out of the players with Reaves averaging career-high in points and assists. The young center in Jaxson Hayes has also stepped up his defensive game and is averaging career-high in rebounds and blocks. He has also shown immense trust in rookie, Dalton Knecht, who is shooting 36.3% on 4.4 three-point attempts per game.
With 20 games left, Redick will look to cement the second seed which helps them in avoiding Oklahoma City Thunder or Denver Nuggets until the Western Conference Finals.
The NBA Coach of the Year award has a front-runner in Kenny Atkinson of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his first season with the Cavs, Atkinson has led the team to the best record in the league. The franchise leads the league in most of the major statistics and also has a chance at breaking the franchise record for most wins in a season. The record sits at 66 and Cavs have 52 wins with 20 games remaining.
J.B. Bickerstaff of the Detroit Pistons is second for leading the Pistons’ young squad to a guaranteed playoff spot. After finishing dead last in the league in two of the last three seasons, Bickerstaff’s transformation has been quite commendable.
According to BetMGM, the top-5 NBA Coach of the Year odds are:
Coach | Odds |
Kenny Atkinson (Cleveland Cavaliers) | -1000 |
J.B. Bickerstaff (Detroit Pistons) | +700 |
JJ Redick (Los Angeles Lakers) | +3000 |
Taylor Jenkins (Memphis Grizzlies) | +6000 |
Mark Daigneault (Oklahoma City Thunder) | +8000 |
Some distant favorites include JJ Redick of the Lakers. With overall development of players game and team success, Redick has proved the doubters wrong and is all set to make the NBA playoffs in his first season as a coach.
Taylor Jenkins of the Grizzlies, after missing the playoffs and suffering from injuries last season, has led the team to a winning record and a guaranteed playoff spot. The coach has also developed rookies in Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells, both top-10 in points per game and Wells has made the most three-pointers.
Mark Daigneault of the Thunder, who has led the team to back-to-back first seed in the West. He was named the 2023-24 NBA Coach of the Year and has returned back to become the 12th coach to win two or more awards.
