NBA announce $25,000 fine for Celtics’ Jaylen Brown for “inappropriate gesture” against Pistons

Jaylen Brown tried to defend himself by saying that he was “just caught up in the moment, I guess.”

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown has been fined for making a cut-throat gesture during the game on Wednesday night. Just after the day, the NBA handed a $25,000 fine for an “inappropriate gesture ” after a dunk against the Pistons.

NBA head of basketball operations Joe Dumars confirmed the penalty on Friday and the league considered Brown’s taunt to Pistons player an “inappropriate gesture.”

Brown had an idea of NBA’s action for his gesture

This incident happened during the first quarter of the game when Brown threw down a dunk against Isaiah Stewart. The Celtics forward then stared at the Detroit player for a few moments before making a cut-throat gesture.

Boston Celtics had a 39-24 lead in the first quarter and Piston couldn’t recover till the end to face a 130-120 loss. Jalen Brown finished with a career-high 28 points and had six rebounds and nine assists. Kristaps Porzingis contributed 26 points and Sam Hauser added 20.

Brown spoke to the media on Wednesday night after the game and expressed that he expected to face action from the NBA for his gesture. The Celtics star tried to defend himself by saying that he was “just caught up in the moment, I guess.”

“Big play,” he added. “I think that the NBA and the NBPA are sensitive about the gestures and things like that, so you’ve got to be mindful of that.”

$25,000 fine will not break the bank considering the net worth of Brown

Meanwhile, fans had different opinions and they also criticized the NBA for not letting players to show emotions during the game. On the other side, few fans considered the fine pretty small after knowing Brown’s net worth.

Jalen Brown signed a five-year contract with the NBA Champions in 2023 worth $285.3 million. In 2024-25, he is set to make $49.2 million. A $25,000 fine will not give him any setback but it would be a clear remark by the NBA to avoid any inappropriate gesture.

The 2024 Finals MVP started for the Celtics today’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks at TD Garden. Brown scored 25 points to guide Celtics to a 111-105 win. The 28-year-old is averaging 25.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game this season.
