Continuing on the path of her comeback, Osaka won in straight sets against local favorite Sara Errani in the first round, followed by two slightly tougher matches against Viktorija Golubic and Marie Bouzková in the second and third rounds, respectively.

As for Stearns, she has also played some sublime tennis with straight set wins over Nuria Brancaccio and Anna Kalinskaya in the first two rounds while coming through a huge win over the fifth-seed Madison Keys in the previous round.

While both players were close in the statistics column, it was Stearns who held her nerve in the deciding set tie breaker as she gained momentum at the crucial moment, going on to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) in 2 hours and 23 minutes.
