Liverpool can’t seem to escape from their horrendous run of form and it’s been hovering over them in the middle of their preparations for the pivotal Champions League match against Inter Milan. However, that hasn’t even been the biggest problem Liverpool are handling in the last few days. Controversies surrounding Mohamed Salah has taken that slot.
And it has now been fanned more by the absence of their ace forward. Salah’s recent comments have now defined one of the most turbulent moments of Arne Slot’s early tenure. The Egyptian star, who is usually a guaranteed starter, was left out of the travelling squad for the crucial clash in Italy on Wednesday. The shocker of a development followed a tense fallout between Salah and Slot.

Salah’s frustration began after a number of games where he was only brought on from the bench. The situation escalated dramatically after Liverpool drew at Leeds. The Egyptian publicly questioned his relationship with Slot. He didn’t hesitate to express uncertainty about his long-term future either.
Reportedly, the interview was later discussed within the club to be unprecedented in tone. And it bound the hands of senior decision-makers to take swift action. Salah trained as usual ahead of the trip. However, he was later directly informed that he would not be a part of the travelling party. Reportedly, the move was agreed upon by the hierarchy within the club and Slot fully endorsed the stance.
There has not been any word yet on whether Salah would receive any disciplinary punishment. But, it seems that the club has temporarily withdrawn him from selection to reassess the situation. Now, whether he will be available for the Premier League match against Brighton this weekend remains to be seen.

When Slot was later asked about it, he denied Salah’s claim that their relationship had fractured. He said that the forward was respectful during training and discussions. He still acknowledged that such comments needed a clear response, saying, “Usually I’m calm and polite, but that doesn’t mean I’m weak.”
The timing of the controversies shrouding Liverpool could hardly have come at a worse time. Arne slot, with a threadbare squad is already dealing with injuries and illness. They travelled to Milan already short of attacking options. And this came at a time when the team has already been struggling at the pitch.

The Reds have won only a single game in their last six across all competitions and the Nerazzurri are no mere rivals at the European stage. At such a time, the environment inside the dressing room, the cohesion between the coach and one of the aces of the team, and the fans’ voices hugely matter. And inside the dressing room, senior voices have stressed that unity.
Alisson expressed hope that Mohamed Salah would still represent the club again. He showed empathy for a frustrated Salah and but also emphasised responsibility towards the team. Meanwhile, supporters have been split on the matter as well. Some are arguing that Salah has crossed a line while others are blaming the unsteady tactical system and recent run of poor results for creating the tension.
