Fifth seeds Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider will take on the protected-ranking pair of Shuko Aoyama and Wang Yafan in the third round of the US Open doubles. The Russian duo has looked sharp so far in New York, cruising past Harriet Dart/Yulia Putintseva and then Storm Hunter/Desirae Krawczyk without much trouble. On the other side, Aoyama/Wang rallied past Hao-ching Chan/Jiang Xinyu in a comeback win before breezing through Viktorija Golubic/Ann Li in straight sets.

Andreeva and Shnaider have already established themselves as one of the most promising young pairings on tour. They’ve captured two titles this season in Brisbane and Miami and have made several deep runs. Still, inconsistency has crept in, with early-round exits balancing out their breakthroughs. Their semifinal finish in Melbourne ended with an upset loss to Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova. The trend continued in Dubai, Rome, and Roland Garros, where Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani repeatedly halted their campaigns in the last four. Outside of those runs, the duo has struggled to push beyond the third round at other events.

For Aoyama and Wang, the partnership is still finding its footing. Aoyama, a veteran doubles presence, has been searching for stability since parting ways with longtime partner Eri Hozumi earlier in the year. She and Hozumi actually faced Andreeva/Shnaider back in Brisbane, falling in straight sets. Since Doha, Aoyama has rotated through partners before linking up with Wang. Though the pairing has yet to make a significant mark, their most recent outing before New York ended in a first-round exit at Tennis in the Land.
