Sankalp Harikrishnan

Saturday night battle in USA!

In a friendly clash of titans, South American veterans Mexico are set to take on Switzerland at the Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday. While the European stars are preparing for their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in September, this month’s friendlies hold more importance to Mexico – who will be competing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup next weekend.

During the last international break, Mexico managed to add a coveted piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet. El Tri defeated Panama in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League, thanks to a late winner by Raul Jimenez. Contrarily, the Swiss superstars were knocked out of the Nations League after a loss to Spain. However, both teams are on a two-match unbeaten run heading into the key encounter.

Mexico, who will be hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026, will be desperate to make an impact ahead of the grandest stage in sport. The Nations League win was their first taste of success since 2023, and El Tri will be heavily relying on the experienced Jimenez to guide them throughout. Having been knocked out in the group stage in 2022, a home World Cup presents a world of opportunity for Javier Aguirre’s troops.

For Switzerland, qualification into the next World Cup seems likely. The European giants, who shocked the world by dumping reigning champions Italy out of the 2024 Euros. With Murat Yakin at the helm, the Rossocrociati will be aiming to tidy up on the defensive front. Since their Round of 16 upset over the Azzurri in June last year, they are yet to record a clean sheet.

Several veterans of the Mexican side have been left out of the squad for the upcoming Gold Cup – including Luis Romo and Gerardo Arteaga. Edson Alvarez is likely to slot into the heart of midfield. Switzerland Team News

Some of Switzerland’s biggest names have called it a day on their international careers – the likes of Yann Sommer, Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabian Schar will be whole-heartedly missed. Zeki Amoundi, Aurele Amenda and Ruben Vargas have all been sidelined due to injuries. While the men in red have a stacked midfield, their under-staffed back line could face difficulties yet again.
