Max Scherzer signs one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays

A future Hall of Famer, the pitcher is finalizing an agreement with the seventh team of his illustrious career.

Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, finalized his future in Major League Baseball (MLB) on Thursday, October 30, securing a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays worth $15.5 million. The agreement was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

However, the deal is still contingent on Scherzer passing his physical examination, as noted by Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. Should he clear the medical tests, Scherzer will join a rotation that already includes Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, Chris Bassitt, and Bowden Francis, positioning him as one of the key figures in the Canadian team’s pitching staff.

At 40 years old, Scherzer battled multiple injuries during the previous season, including issues with his back, shoulder, and muscle strains. He pitched just 43.1 innings, the fewest in his distinguished career. However, in the 2023 season, he played a pivotal role in helping the Texas Rangers secure their first-ever World Series championship. Scherzer posted a 3.77 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, and 174 strikeouts across 27 starts.

Some of those starts were made during his brief, less successful tenure with the New York Mets, before he was traded to the Rangers and found success in the latter half of the season.

Blue Jays hope Scherzer can help return to the playoffs

Despite his age, Scherzer remains a highly respected figure in MLB rotations. In addition to his World Series title with Texas, Scherzer has won another championship with the Washington Nationals in 2019. He is also a three-time Cy Young Award winner, a three-time All-MLB selection, and an eight-time All-Star.

Scherzer’s arrival could be a critical piece in the Blue Jays’ effort to return to postseason play. After securing playoff berths in the previous three seasons, Toronto missed out on the postseason in 2024, finishing with a 71-91 record. In addition to Scherzer, the Blue Jays have already bolstered their bullpen with the signings of Jeff Hoffman, Yimi García, and Nick Sandlin.
