Pirates sign reliever Tim Mayza and infielder Adam Frazier

Frazier was with the Kansas City Royals in 2024, while Mayza served with the New York Yankees.

On Monday (27), Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates had agreed to a one-year, $1.15 million deal with reliever Tim Mayza. The following day, the number of reinforcements increased as second baseman Adam Frazier, according to MLB.com reporter Mark Feisand, also joined the Pirates.

For this stint, the infielder will earn $1.525 million through the end of the season.

Frazier was with the Kansas City Royals in 2024, posting modest offensive numbers with 53 hits in 104 at-bats, 35 runs, 22 RBIs, three home runs, three stolen bases, and a .202 batting average.

Mayza also had a tough year. Serving with the New York Yankees, he posted a 0-2 record in 50 games with a 6.33 ERA, eight holds, and 28 strikeouts over 42.2 innings. However, he did pitch in three postseason games for the team, allowing no runs.

Even without much standout performance in 2024, the duo is expected to help the Pirates with their roster development thanks to their experience.

On a young roster full of players with the potential to become key league figures (such as infielders Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz, and pitchers Paul Skenes and Jared Jones), only three players on the expected Opening Day roster are over 30 years old: Frazier, Mayza, and outfielder Andrew McCutchen, a franchise legend.

Although the deal for Mayza has not yet been officially announced, Pittsburgh posted a welcome message on their X account for Frazier’s return, who had played for the Pirates from 2016 to 2021, including an All-Star Game selection in his final year with the team.
