Get to know why the Seattle Mariners are not willing to trade Luis Castillo
The Seattle Mariners have put their pitcher Luis Castillo on the “off-limits” section when it comes to trades. The team is on a high note after enjoying a 3-0 win record against the Texas Rangers from April 11, 2025 to April 13, 2025. The team also presently ranks #3 in the AL West with a 8-8 win-loss record so far.
Luis Castillo, himself has been a veteran member of Major League Baseball (MLB) for nine-years as of 2025. He had represented the Cincinnati Reds for six years since his debut before joining the Mariners. More recently, he was also chosen as the Mariners MVP in 2023. However, why is he “off-limits” when it comes to trading? Let’s have a look.

The Seattle Mariners have a very good starting rotation of five members which include Luis Castillo as per MLB Trade Rumors. The team had initially considered trading Luis Castillo to free up money, as per Seattle Mariners on SI. Unfortunately, several players of the team like Ryan Bliss, Jorge Polanco and Victor Robles have undergone injuries. This has caused the team to change their earlier decision. Bob Nightengale of USA-Today has revealed regarding the situation (via Yardbarker)-
“The Seattle Mariners desperately need some offensive help after injuries to right fielder Victor Robles and second baseman Ryan Bliss will sideline them for at least three to four months. Yet, one club who offered a young infielder for veteran starter Luis Castillo remains off-limits- at least for now”.
The Seattle Mariners have also failed to get infielders as per MLB Trade Rumors. They had talked with Alec Bohm, Triston Casas and Nico Hoerner, but failed to land any of them on their team. They instead had to add Donovan Solano while keeping their infield mostly unchanged. Hence, they are not willing to let Luis Castillo go for the time being.
Luis Castillo is presently in the middle of the five-year contract extension that he signed with the Seattle Mariners on September 24, 2022 as per Spotrac. He is presently in his fourth year with the team in 2025. However, he has already displayed his skills as a pitcher by achieving 14 strikeouts while pitching 17.0 innings in just 3 games as per Baseball Reference. He was a part of the starting rotation of all three games.
The Seattle Mariners might not be wanting to trade Luis Castillo, for now. However, the veteran pitcher might find himself on a different team in the future, when he gets traded. Meanwhile the team is setting up for their next three games against Castillo’s former team, the Cincinnati Reds from August 14, 2025 to August 17, 2025.
