Experience meets momentum as Cilic and Cobolli battle for a Wimbledon quarterfinal spot
Marin Cilic will face 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli in the Wimbledon 2025 fourth round, pitting experience against rising momentum. Cobolli has been sharp all tournament, dispatching Beibit Zhukayev, wildcard Jack Pinnington Jones, and 15th seed Jakub Mensik, all in straight sets. Cilic, meanwhile, opened with a routine win over Rafael Collignon before stunning fourth seed Jack Draper and defeating Jaume Munar, both in four sets.

Cilic, 36 years old, has battled injuries and inconsistency since 2023 but found renewed success on the Challenger Tour. The Croatian won the Girona title, his first in nearly 18 years on the Challenger tour, and then made history in Nottingham as the oldest grass-court Challenger champion. This Wimbledon run is his best main-draw result of the season so far, having previously reached the quarters in Dubai. Stat-wise, Cilic has hit 22 aces and won 71% on first serve but converted just 26% of 31 break points.

He’s fired 109 aces this season, winning 66% of first-serve points and converting 37% of a hefty 259 break point chances.

Flavio Cobolli holds a commanding 2-0 lead in his head-to-head against Marin Cilic. Their first meeting came in Umag in 2023, followed by another clash at Roland Garros earlier this year. On both occasions, the young Italian got the better of the former US Open champion, winning in straight sets each time.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Roland Garros | Round of 128 | Flavio Cobolli | 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 |
| 2023 | Umag | Round of 32 | Flavio Cobolli | 6-4, 6-3 |
| Marin Cilic | Category | Flavio Cobolli |
| 83 | Current Ranking | 24 |
| 590-341 | Career W-L | 59-53 |
| 2-4 | YTD W-L | 18-15 |
| 21 | Career Titles | 2 |
| 1 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 0 | YTD Titles | 2 |
Cobolli’s fearless shot-making and recent wins over top names make him a real threat, but Cilic’s experience in best-of-five sets could prove decisive. A former US Open champion (2014) and Wimbledon finalist (2017), the Croatian knows how to navigate deep Slam waters.
Cobolli, though, has been in red-hot form, winning two titles this year. It’s a tight matchup on paper, but with nearly two decades on tour since turning pro in 2005, Cilic’s experience gives him the slightest edge.
