Marcus Rashford Scores Debut Goal in Daegu vs Barcelona – But What Lies Ahead?

Marcus Rashford has opened his account for Barcelona. He scored his debut goal during a commanding 5-0 win over Daegu FC in the final match of the club’s pre-season tour in Asia. The 27-year-old came off the bench at half-time and netted his side’s fifth with a composed finish, latching onto an Eric Garcia cross to slot home from close range.

Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United last month. His summer move marked a significant career shift after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. He was part of a five-man “bomb squad” frozen out by the Premier League club. Only Rashford managed to secure an exit so far.

A Mixed Start to Life in Spain

The England international’s start at Barcelona was anything but smooth. In his debut against Vissel Kobe, he came on at half-time but was substituted just 30 minutes later. Manager Hansi Flick later clarified, “Rashford hasn’t played that much, and we also wanted to give Gerard Martin 15 minutes because he was playing after his injury.”

Rashford featured again in a 6-3 win over FC Seoul before making his mark against Daegu. Interestingly, the Daegu match saw Rashford deployed centrally for the first time in pre-season. Barcelona operated without Lewandowski or Ferran Torres. Though still inclined to drift left, Flick hinted at the player’s tactical flexibility, stating:

“Rashford can play at number nine, at number eleven… We put him in because Ferran was having problems.” Rashford has voiced his determination to make the most of this opportunity, saying, “I’ve integrated quite well and I’m adapting to the team and the coach. The quality is very high and the intensity too, and that’s what we need to maintain throughout the season.”

Uncertain Future Amid Financial Roadblocks

Barcelona’s loan deal includes a £26 million option to buy Rashford. However, financial constraints continue to hinder the club’s operations. The forward remains unregistered for La Liga play due to unresolved financial issues, but he remains optimistic. Speaking on the matter, he said, “I’m not worried about my registration.”

He added, “I think it’s something the club needs to resolve, and I’m confident it will happen.” As the Joan Gamper Trophy approaches and the La Liga season nears, Rashford’s future at the club hinges on both performance and boardroom manoeuvres. Even though his long-term fate remains uncertain at Barcelona, he’s made a promising start for now.
