Manchester City Target Lyon Superstar in Summer Transfer Window

Abhinav Goel

After winning the Premier League four times in a row, this season has been an underwhelming one for City.

The departure of Kevin De Bruyne from Manchester City at the end of this season will leave a sigificant void in the team. Manchester City are already going their worst Premier League season since Pep Guardiola first took charge at the Etihad. Widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, De Bruyne’s vision and creativity have helped redefine City’s identity under Pep Guardiola.

It’ll be hugely important for Manchester City to find a good replacement for the Belgian. As a result, Man City have begun exploring options in the transfer market as they quietly prepare for life after Kevin De Bruyne. Guardiola and the recruitment team are focused on identifying a technically gifted player who fits seamlessly into their high-tempo possession-based game.

Man City Target Rayan Cherki

Olympique Lyonnais star Rayan Cherki has reportedly emerged as one of the top targets for Manchester City as they look to reinforce their midfield options. According to the report, City could shift their focus to Cherki if a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz doesn’t materialize. Cherki, who is under contract with Lyon until the summer of 2026, is widely expected to leave the club at the end of the current season.

Cherki has attracted interest from several top European clubs thanks to his exceptional technical ability. Cherki has been in outstanding form this season, scoring ten goals and getting 18 assists in 36 appearances this season. Only three players from Europe’s top five leagues – Bruno Fernandes (129), Raphinha (122) and Joshua Kimmich (113) – have created more than Cherki’s 103 chances in all competitions this season. Cherki also ranks second in Ligue 1 for completed dribbles with 74, only behind Paris St-Germain’s Desire Doue with 79.

After winning the Premier League four times in a row, this season has been an underwhelming one for City. They currently sit in the sixth spot, 21 points behind leaders Liverpool and are struggling to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Cherki’s arrival could offer Manchester City a significant boost next season. His ability to operate as a playmaker and create chances in tight spaces aligns well with City’s tactical setup. At just 21, he also offers long-term value, making him a compelling option for Pep Guardiola.
