Manchester City claimed a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday but they were without their first-choice goalkeeper Ederson and played backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in goal. Ederson was forced off in the 71st minute during the clash with Crystal Palace on April 12 due to injury. Ahead of the Everton fixture, manager Pep Guardiola admitted he was uncertain about when the Brazilian goalkeeper would be fit to return.

Ederson has been Manchester City’s undisputed No.1 since arriving in 2017. The Brazilian has played a key role in the club’s multiple Premier League title wins and their Champions League triumph. However, persistent groin issues throughout the current season have raised concerns over his long-term fitness. Manchester City have identified Diogo Costa to replace Ederson. Known for his shot-stopping ability, distribution, and composure under pressure, Costa fits the profile of a modern goalkeeper that Pep Guardiola demands. The Portuguese international has a £63 million release clause in his contract, which runs for another two seasons at Porto.

Manchester City are confident that a bid in the region of £50 million could be sufficient to secure Costa’s signature. He has established himself as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers. While Manchester United have also shown interest in the Porto star, their financial limitations make it unlikely that they’ll compete with City for Costa.
