Malik Beasley’s name continues to circulate in free agency talks, with the New York Knicks reportedly among the teams interested in signing the sharpshooter.

Beasley, who excelled with the Detroit Pistons last season, averaged 16.3 points per game and became one of the key reasons for their turnaround. The Pistons, who had struggled to a 14-68 record in the 2023-24 campaign, bounced back to reach the playoffs, with Beasley’s scoring and consistency off the bench playing a major role.

Initially, Detroit appeared ready to commit to Beasley long-term. Reports indicated that the Pistons were prepared to offer a three-year, $42 million contract before free agency.

However, that plan shifted once reports of legal trouble involving Malik Beasley surfaced as the market opened. Nearly two months later, his lawyers confirmed that he was not part of any investigation, but doubts had already changed the Pistons’ approach.

In the meantime, Detroit signed Duncan Robinson to a three-year, $48 million deal. While that move does not completely close the door on a Malik Beasley return, it complicates the situation. The Pistons still have an open roster spot, but under his Non-Bird rights, they can only extend him a $7.2 million deal, despite his unrestricted free agent status.

The Knicks have reportedly entered the mix, though their financial flexibility is limited. With little cap space available, they could only extend Beasley a veteran minimum contract. Despite this, their interest suggests that Beasley remains a valued piece who could strengthen a rotation with his perimeter shooting and instant offense.

Beasley Should Stay With the Pistons

Malik Beasley faces a decision about whether to chase the most lucrative deal available or return to the Pistons, where he already holds strong ties. His popularity among teammates and fans grew last season, and his production reflected his value.

He finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting and became only the fifth player in league history to hit 300 three-pointers in a single season.

His postseason performance reinforced his reputation. Beasley produced two 20-point games in the playoffs against the Knicks, showing his ability to impact games under pressure. Even with Robinson’s arrival, Detroit would welcome him back because of his proven consistency and leadership within a young roster.

For a Pistons team building around one of the league’s best young cores, Beasley’s presence as a veteran scorer could provide balance. His decision will shape his own future, and also Detroit’s depth as they look ahead to another playoff push.
