Luka Doncic's extension confirms the franchise is officially moving past LeBron James.
The Lakers secured their future by extending Luka Doncic with a massive new contract. The Slovenian superstar who shocked the league with a trade from Dallas earlier this year, is now set to lead the Lakers into a bold new era.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Lakers have extended Luka Doncic through a three year deal worth $165 million with a player option in 2028. The 26-year-old will earn an average of $55 million annually through the max extension.

Luka’s early run with the Lakers didn’t yield results as they failed to make a deep playoff push. He averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists with a 45.0 shooting percent from the field.
The Lakers didn’t have the required depth and quality to make a case for themselves in the NBA title race. However, the front office has made some early off season moves to strengthen the side under the leadership of Luka Doncic.
Luka Doncic has been a key force behind the moves that the Lakers have made this season. With LeBron James nearing a move away from the LAL, the Slovenian international has worked out with the front office to build the roster.
I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning. 💜💛 pic.twitter.com/PrTfTxxlpU

The team now looks more like Doncic’s than LeBron’s. After the Washington Mystics waived Marcus Smart, Luka Doncic was the first to reach out. He called the point guard and suggested he make a move to Los Angeles.
Luka Doncic was key to the Marcus Smart signing. The 26-year-old has also gone through a physical transformation shedding a lot of pounds. He is leaner than ever switching to a gluten free diet. Doncic is training in Eastern Europe before the next season kicks-in.
Luka Doncic looks leaner, sharper, and more dangerous than ever, and NBA teams beware. However, despite his transformation, the Lakers may still lack the roster depth required to truly challenge for a deep postseason run next year.
