Luka Doncic joins elite company with historic triple-double in Mavericks vs Lakers

Doncic scored his first triple-double as a Laker against his former team.

All eyes in the NBA were on one game tonight: Luka Doncic facing his old team, the Dallas Mavericks, for the first time since the surprising trade that sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers. The deal, which saw Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a draft pick go to Dallas, had the sports world shocked. Mavs GM Nico Harrison, who orchestrated the trade, was sitting courtside at the Crypto Arena.

As the Lakers fans chanted “Thank You, Nico,” Doncic had one thing on his mind – revenge. And he delivered in a big way.

Doncic, fresh off a 32-point performance against the Nuggets, came out on fire. The 25-year-old finished the game with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists. He also recorded five steals and blocks in a single game – a first for any player in their debut against a former team.

With his 81st career triple-double, first as a Laker, he made history. The 5-time All-Star became the third player in NBA history to record a triple-double against all 30 teams. He joins LeBron James and Russell Westbrook in this elite group.

“The closure is going to take a while” – Luka Doncic on trade saga

During the post-game conference Doncic was asked if facing his former team gave him some kind of closure about the trade.

He responded, saying, “The closure is going to take a while, I think… It’s not ideal, but like I said, I’m glad this game is over. There’s a lot of emotions, but we go little by little, and every day is better.”

With their 8th straight win, Lakers have now jumped to fourth spot in Western Conference standings. They will next face Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday, February 27.
