The Dallas Mavericks get a huge setback in their NBA 2024-25 campaign as their star player, Luka Doncic sustained an injury during the loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Christmas Day. The five-time All-Star left the game on crutches after sustaining a calf strain.

What’s the update on Doncic’s injury? How long will he be sidelined?

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Luka Doncic is expected to miss for an extended period. The 24-year-old guard will have an MRI on Thursday to understand the severity of the injury. It could be a big blow to Dallas in pursuit of the NBA playoffs.

Luka Donic had previously missed a game against the Thunder due to a knee contusion. However, Mavericks secured a victory in his absence but couldn’t cross the line on Christmas Day. The late fourth-quarter comeback added a thrill to the game but it wasn’t enough to reduce the deficit.

Mavericks played the NBA Finals last year and eye another playoffs campaign this season. Doncic’s injury will be a worrying sign for head coach Jason Kidd who pointed out the injury issues after the game. “You never want anybody to get hurt or have injuries, but it’s part of the game. Hopefully, this will be his last one, and hopefully, it’s not too serious,” Jason Kidd said.

As per the reporting of Tim MacMahon, “This is the same calf he (Luka Doncic) had a contusion in October, he’s had multiple strains on that same calf in recent years. They’re going to be careful with it, and if he misses 10 more games this season, he’ll be ineligible for MVP and All-NBA.”

Dallas Mavericks are currently 19-11 as the fourth seed in the Western Conference. Doncic is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists this season. Jason Kidd will now expect Kyrie Irving to take the the offensive load without Luka Doncic.
