Severino’s motivation to join the Athletics

“So this goes back a long time where we know what he was capable of doing,” Forst noted.

Athletics’ rotation gets a boost

Severino will lead the Athletics’ pitching rotation, which includes left-hander JP Sears and promising right-handers Joey Estes and Mitch Spence. Other candidates for rotation spots include rookies J.T. Ginn, Osvaldo Bido, and Brady Basso.

Severino’s presence brings leadership and experience to the team. The 30-year-old is also expected to start on Opening Day against the Seattle Mariners.

Severino’s journey from New York to Oakland

Severino revitalized his career with the New York Mets in 2024, posting a 3.91 ERA over 182 innings in 31 starts. Known for his evolving pitching style, he transitioned from a power pitcher to one who focuses on inducing weak contact. His arsenal now features a hard sinker and a sweeper, which held opponents to a .139 batting average last season.
