Top-seeded Musetti opens against Duckworth as he looks to continue his breakthrough 2025 season.
Third seed Lorenzo Musetti begins his Toronto campaign against Australian qualifier James Duckworth in the second round of the 2025 National Bank Open. The Italian received a first-round bye, while Duckworth cruised past Juncheng Shang in straight sets to earn his spot.
Musetti is enjoying the best season of his career, climbing to a career-high world No. 6 last month. After a solid start with quarterfinals in Hong Kong and Argentina, he hit a brief slump but rebounded impressively with a finals run in Monte Carlo, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in three sets, followed by semifinal finishes in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros. He did, however, withdraw from Rio and Barcelona due to calf and thigh injuries. So far, the Italian has fired 120 aces, winning 69% of first-serve points and 33% of first-serve return points, and converting 39% of 320 break points.

Duckworth, meanwhile, has had a patchy year, though his highlights include a title in Challenger San Luis Potosi, a runner-up finish in Morelia, a round of 16 appearance at Eastbourne, and a quarterfinal run in Mifel. He’s hit 96 aces, won 69% of first-serve points, and converted 32% of 73 break points.
James Duckworth leads the head-to-head against Lorenzo Musetti 1-0, with their only meeting coming in Paris back in 2021. The Aussie came through in three sets on that occasion.

Musetti comes in with top-10 momentum and a string of deep clay runs under his belt. While Duckworth has the tools to test him, the Italian’s shot variety and recent form make him the clear favorite to advance.
