Third seed Lorenzo Musetti will take on 26th seed Alex Michelson in the third round of the National Bank Open in Toronto. Both players received first-round byes. Musetti eased past qualifier James Duckworth, while Michelsen took out Tomas Barrios Vera, with both matches decided in straight sets.

Musetti is currently having a career-best season, having climbed to a career-high No. 6 last month. After a strong start with quarterfinals in Argentina and Hong Kong, he faced a brief slump and missed mid-season events in Rio and Barcelona due to calf and thigh injuries. Since then, he’s rebounded impressively, reaching the Monte Carlo final (losing to Carlos Alcaraz in three sets) and making the semifinals in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros. Statistically, he’s hit 120 aces, won 69% of first-serve points, converted 39% of 320 break points, and taken 33% of first-serve return points.

Michelsen, meanwhile, continues to rise after turning pro in 2023. The 20-year-old American, ranked No. 34, made the quarters in Auckland and the fourth round in Melbourne. He’s also won a Challenger title in Estoril, reached semis in Delray and Mallorca, and made the quarters in Houston and Halle. He’s fired 177 aces, won 70% of first-serve points, converted 36% of 228 break points, and claimed 28% of first-serve return points.
