Tenth seed Elina Svitolina is set to take on qualifier Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round of the National Bank Open in Montreal. While the Ukrainian received a first-round bye, Rakhimova battled back from a set down to defeat wildcard Kaylor Cross in her opener.

Svitolina has enjoyed a solid year so far, making quarterfinal runs at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Roland Garros. She also lifted the title in Rouen, beating Olga Danilovic in straight sets. A back injury forced her out of Strasbourg, but not before she logged strong clay-court performances in Rome (quarterfinals) and Madrid (semifinals). Across 41 matches this season, she’s fired 135 aces, won 68.2% of her first-serve points and converted 48.1% of her break point opportunities.

By contrast, Rakhimova has had a modest season, with a 19-22 main-draw record and mostly early-round exits. Still, there have been glimpses of promise, most recently a quarterfinal showing in Eastbourne, where she pushed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to three sets. She’s also made the quarters at WTA 125 events in Paris and Antalya and reached the Round of 16 in Lleida. In 18 tour-level matches, she has landed 36 aces, won 61.4% of her first-serve points, converted 36.4% of her break points, and claimed 42.7% of return points.
