Liverpool vs Real Madrid Head to Head: Who Holds the Edge in Overall Record Ahead of Champions League Clash?

Moumita Dutta

A familiar rivalry resumes as Liverpool are set to welcome Real Madrid to Anfield in Tuesday’s Champions League league-phase clash. The two European heavyweights have shared countless iconic encounters. And once again, both arrive with high stakes.

Liverpool recently ended their Premier League slump with a crucial 2-0 win over Aston Villa. That win eased pressure on manager Arne Slot after a turbulent few weeks. The Dutchman’s side also impressed in Europe, thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid are unbeaten in the competition so far. They have looked relentless under their new coach. The Spanish giants brushed aside Juventus in their last group outing. They also crushed Valencia 4-0 in La Liga.

Thus, continuing a dominant run that has seen them win 13 of their 14 matches so far this season. With a contrasting run of form for the two sides, Tuesday’s clash promises another thrilling chapter in their storied continental rivalry.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid Champions League Team News

Arne Slot will likely retain the side that beat Aston Villa. Alexis Mac Allister and Andy Robertson are expected to start amid key injuries. Ryan Gravenberch has returned from injury, but Alisson Becker, Giovanni Leoni, and Jeremie Frimpong remain sidelined. Curtis Jones and Alexander Isak are doubtful due to ongoing groin issues.

Xabi Alonso’s squad will be without key defenders Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba. Only the latter has a slight chance of returning. Even so, he may not start the match. Trent Alexander-Arnold, now at Real, could face his former club if deemed fit but it seems unlikely. Otherwise, Federico Valverde may continue as an auxiliary right-back at Anfield.
