Liverpool Confirm £79m Hugo Ekitike Signing from Eintracht Frankfurt

Reds Beat Rivals To Land Bundesliga Team of the Season Forward From Eintracht Frankfurt.

Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth £79 million. This made the 23-year-old French striker the latest marquee arrival at Anfield this summer. The agreement is subject to international clearance at this point.

It sees the Reds pay an initial £69m with an additional £10m in performance-related add-ons. In the meantime, Ekitike has completed his medical and agreed personal terms. This allows him to fly out later this week to Hong Kong to join Arne Slot and Co. on their pre-season tour of Asia.

Hugo Ekitike Rise and Frankfurt Impact

Ekitike’s career trajectory has been swift. He started at Stade de Reims and then played for a brief stint with PSG. Following that, he moved to Frankfurt on loan in early 2024 before making the move permanent. He spent over a season and a half in Germany.

During that time, he scored 26 goals in 64 appearances. He even earned a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for 2024–25. Last season alone, Ekitike netted 15 times and assisted eight more in the Bundesliga. Thus, making him one of the league’s most productive players under the age of 23.

According to Opta, his 117 shots were the highest in the German top flight. Frankfurt’s sporting director Markus Krosche praised the player’s contributions, saying, “Hugo has developed tremendously… a true asset to our team and the entire club both on and off the pitch.”

Why Liverpool Moved Quickly

Liverpool accelerated their pursuit after a £70m bid from Newcastle was rejected. They were aware that Frankfurt wanted a bidding war. Liverpool waited until the right moment as they were mirroring their successful hijack of Spurs’ move for Luis Díaz in 2022. Manchester United also reportedly made a late move.

However, Ekitike was determined to join Liverpool. The Reds saw Ekitike as a multi-functional attacker capable of playing centrally or drifting wide, much like Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s original target. Even so, this signing pushed Liverpool’s summer spending close to £300m.

The amount is more than any other Premier League club. However, notably, they registered record revenues of £613.8m for 2023-24. Ekitike is Liverpool’s fifth major signing this window. The Reds have already welcomed Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giorgi Mamardashvili.
