Lewandowski Will Not Play Under Current Poland Coach Michal Probierz, What Happened Between Them?

Following the fallout with Probierz, the former Bayern Munich striker will take a step back from international duties.

Polish football has been rocked by a dramatic fallout between national icon Robert Lewandowski and head coach Michal Probierz. Notably, the legendary striker publicly announced on Sunday that he will not represent Poland as long as current manager Michal Probierz remains in charge of Poland national team.

Lewandowski is Poland’s all-time leading scorer with 85 goals in a record 158 appearances. However, the Barcelona striker has now placed his international career on an indefinite pause. Following the fallout with Probierz, the former Bayern Munich striker will take a step back from international duties.

Lewandowski announced his bombshell decision in a social media post:

“Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the coach of the Polish National Team, I decided to resign from playing in the Polish National Team while he is the coach. I hope that I will be able to play for the best fans in the world again.”

What Happened Between Robert Lewandowski and Poland Coach Michal Probierz?

Tensions between Lewandowski and Probierz escalated in June 2025. The first sign of disagreement came when the Barcelona forward withdrew from Poland’s June training camp, citing that he was mentally and physically tired. As a result, he was absent from Poland’s 2-0 friendly win over Moldova and will also miss the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Finland on June 10.

The situation took a more dramatic turn on Sunday when Probierz stripped Lewandowski of the national team captaincy. The manager informed the Polish squad that Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski would take over as captain going forward. According to a statement from the Polish Football Association, the decision was communicated directly to Lewandowski, the entire team, and the coaching staff.

The move was not well received by Poland’s all-time top scorer, who quickly issued a statement on social media declaring that he was stepping away from the national team indefinitely. Probierz will have the opportunity to respond when he addresses the media on Monday ahead of Poland’s clash against Finland. He will be joined by newly appointed captain Zielinski.
