Lautaro Martinez gets into the history books as Inter Milan beat Feyenoord 2-0 in the Champions League clash

The second day of the Champions League Round of 16 clashes packed some real matchups and star-studded lineups. To kick off the second day, Inter Miami was hosted by Feyenoord on Wednesday, March 5. Lautaro Martínez, who sealed Inter’s victory by scoring the second goal early in the second half, marked history in team’s win.

Martínez became Internazionale’s all-time top scorer in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, with his 18th goal in the competition for the club. He moved clear of the Argentinean Sandro Mazzola (17 goals).

The visitors were made to work for their win as they soaked up pressure early into the game. With a late-first-half goal by Marcus Thuram to open the scoring, the Italian side went into the break with a boost.

Inter Milan captain Martínez was quick to ponder upon the momentum-scoring minutes after the break. The 27-year-old slammed the ball into the top-right corner in an emphatic fashion for his goal number 18 in the Champions League.

The contributions from Thuram and Martínez provide a healthy lead to take back to Italy next week. Feyenoord who came through after a triumph over Juventus will be put to a real test on their visit for the second leg now.

The Argentine striker who joined Inter Milan in 2018 seems to be loving life in Italy. Following their victory, Martínez expressed his desire for his club as he also hinted on wanting to stay at Inter till his retirement.

Talking about signing the deal last summer, Martínez addressed the media saying:

“I’d be happy to spend the rest of my career at Inter, of course”.

“I love this club, I feel great every day here… and I signed a new deal last summer even after receiving many bids”.

“I’m very happy and proud to be at Inter.”

Being Inter Milan’s top scorer for the past three seasons and winning two Serie A titles, Martinez has led by example over the past few years. Furthermore, It’ll be interesting to see how far he can guide Inter Milan this year after securing an early advantage over Feyenoord.
