Barcelona’s Champions League campaign begins with a trip to St. James’ Park on Thursday. But Hansi Flick’s squad will be missing one of their key young stars. Lamine Yamal has been ruled out of the match against Newcastle United, leaving everyone anxious ahead of the high-stakes opener.

The 18-year-old forward has quickly become central to both club and country. However, concerns over his workload have been a matter of debate for some time now. Following heavy minutes with Spain during the international break, Yamal has now been sidelined with discomfort. Thus, putting doubt over his readiness for the demanding schedule ahead.

Lamine Yamal Absence Confirmed

Yamal missed Barcelona’s emphatic 6-0 win over Valencia. He has also been left out of the 22-man squad that traveled to England. The winger has been suffering from groin pain since returning from national team duty. Flick openly criticized Spain’s decision to play him extensively in consecutive international fixtures earlier this month.

After Barcelona’s win against Valencia, boss Hansi Flick said, “Lamine needs to be carefully managed.” He stressed the importance of protecting the teenager from overexertion. Now, his absence leaves Barcelona short in attack. Although notably, the return of Frenkie de Jong provides balance in midfield.

Alongside Yamal, Flick will be managing the absence of Alejandro Balde and Gavi who remain unavailable due to injuries.
