Lamine Yamal Injury Update: Did the 17-Year-Old Fake An Injury for Ansu Fati?

Ansu Fati was brought on for Lamine Yamal in the 86th minute.

Barcelona walked all over Borrusia Dortmund winning 4-0 at the Camp Nou in the Champions League Quarter-final Leg 1. Thanks to a brace from Robert Lewandowski after Raphinha opened the scoring, the Spanish side has a firm grip over the tie and semifinals. 

Lamine Yamal sealed the deal in the 77th minute after scoring the fourth goal for Barcelona. The 17-year-old was subbed on for Ansu Fati as he was seen limping while going off the pitch. Manager Hand Flick addressed his injury situation in the post-match conference confirming the youngster hasn’t sustained any damage.

‘He’s Fine’ – Hansi Flick on Lamine Yamal

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick addressed Yamal’s injury situation confirming he hasn’t sustained any damage. When asked about the updates on Yamal, Flick said:

“Lamine Yamal has no injury, he’s fine”.

“He’s played a lot of minutes recently and so it was good to rest a bit”.

Fati who grabbed some minutes in the Champions League was cheered on by Camp Nou as he came on.  Addressing the importance of Fati to get back to his form, Flick added:

 “Ansu Fati needs to get minutes, he’s training well, and he deserved to play. It was good for Lamine to rest and also for Ansu Fati to play”.

Fati has managed to start only one game in La Liga after sustaining an injury towards the end of 2024. The internet reacted to his appearance as they claimed Yamal might’ve faked an injury so that Fati could be on the pitch.

The Spanish youngster was seen asking to be subbed off multiple times in the final 10 minutes. Reacting to the substitution a fan wrote on X: “Yamal faked an injury so that Fati could get subbed in? You’ve earned a huge spot in my heart Yamal, the Best player in the world”

Yamal also became the first player in the history of the Champions League to score multiple knockout stage goals before turning 18. He now has seven G/A starting all 10 games for Hansi Flick in the Champions League.

It was a great outing for FC Barcelona all around as they get one step closer to the Champions League semifinals. Going to Dortmund next week will be strictly business given the four-goal lead they will carry with them.
